Explore Math Programs for High School Students
Explore Math brings
together motivated graduate, undergraduate and high school students.
The academic year Explore Math programs are run by graduate students
who design workshops that allow participating students to share the
process of mathematical research, discovery, and problem solving.
The California State Summer
School in Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) at UC Davis is a
rigorous, four week residential program for talented and motivated
students in grades 9-12 (extraordinary 8th grade students may also
attend). COSMOS students enroll in short courses that are designed
to introduce students to subjects not traditionally offered in high
school. Courses will be offered in Optical Science, Robotics, Earth
Science, Mathematics, and more.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS join us on Saturdays to learn about mathematical models and to apply creative problem-solving skills to real-world scenarios. The MME culminates in the COMAP High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling in November.
UNDERGRADUATES learn about math modeling by working with the high school students, and by working on their own problems during a seminar course, inspired by the current research faculty members from across campus, who visit our class as guest lecturers. For undergraduates, the MME culminates in the collegiate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, held in February.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are introduced to a smorgasbord of interesting mathematics during Math Circle workshops. Previous topics include graph theory, game theory, and cryptography. High school students discuss material and work on problems with graduate students and undergraduates during weekly sessions.
UNDERGRADUATES gain experience communicating interesting mathematics with students by assisting with the workshops and designing a junior-high school lesson inspired by Math Circle sessions. They meet with the graduate students instructors in a weekly seminar to discuss mathematical content and pedagogy.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS train for the American Regions Math League at our weekly Thursday sessions. ARML is the World Series of mathematics competitions. The competition consists of several events, which include a team round, a power question, an individual round, two relay rounds and a super relay.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS conduct workshops on problem solving methods useful for ARML contests. They are coached on these techniques by the graduate student instructors.
