Undergraduate Math Competitions

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition

The annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition is held early in December. It is the most prestigious college math competition and is open to all undergraduates in the United States and Canada. Each year, over 3000 students take the Putnam with the 25 top-scoring individuals receive awards of up to $750 as well as solicitations from summer employers and graduate programs. It's also a fun, intense, intellectual experience for everyone involved.

To take the Putnam, you must sign in with the Student Services Office by sending an email to studentservices@math.ucdavis.edu. More specific details about the contest are typically announced in math classes during the month of October of the Fall Quarter.

Robert Lewis Wasser Memorial Mathematics Contest

Held annually in the Spring, this mathematics competition is open to all full-time freshmen and sophomores at UC Davis. A $500 price is awarded to the first place winner with prizes also given by the department for honorable mentions. Contest prizes were made possible from an endowment that was initiated by a contribution from Robert Lewis Wasser's grandmother. Robert Wasser, now deceased, was a mathematics major in 1991.

The Spring Mathematics Contest

All undergraduates at UC Davis are eligible to take the Spring Mathematics Contest, which is held each spring on the same day as the Wasser Memorial Contest. This contest was started many years ago to help identify our better students in mathematics. As money permits, monetary prizes are awarded to students placing first, second, and third as well as to honorable mentions.
